Background and Objective: Artificial intelligence, as an emerging technology, can improve the quality of patient care. Despite the importance of teaching this technology to nursing students, no study in Iran has yet simultaneously investigated their knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding the clinical applications of Artificial intelligence, which may challenge educational planning. Therefore, this study aimed to determine and evaluate the level of knowledge, attitude, and practice of nursing students regarding the applications of Artificial intelligence in the healthcare system.
Methods: This was a descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study. The statistical population consisted of 300 nursing students from the first to eighth semesters at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Zahedan University of Medical Sciences, who were selected through stratified random sampling. Validated questionnaires were used to assess knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding Artificial intelligence. Data analysis was performed using Mann–Whitney U, Kruskal–Wallis, and Spearman's correlation coefficient tests in SPSS version 26. The significance level was set at less than 0.05.
Findings: The mean age of participants was 21.47 ± 1.87 years, and the majority (82.7%) were interested in technology. The levels of knowledge (52%), attitude (53.3%), and practice (82.7%) of students were at a good level. The results of Spearman's correlation test showed significant positive correlations between knowledge and attitude, knowledge and practice, and attitude and practice (P < 0.001).
Conclusions: The findings of this study indicate that revising the nursing curriculum and integrating basic and applied concepts of Artificial intelligence into the course syllabi appear to be essential. Additionally, designing practical workshops and targeted educational interventions that leverage students' interest can maximize the effectiveness of education in enhancing professional skills.
