Background and Objective: The advancement of stem cell science represents one of the most pivotal breakthroughs in modern medical research, offering promising prospects for disease treatment and tissue regeneration. This study aimed to assess the awareness, knowledge, and attitudes of clinical dental students toward stem cells and regenerative dentistry.
Methods: This descriptive-cross-sectional study was conducted in 2024 among 150 clinical dental students at Babol University of Medical Sciences. Data were collected using a validated and reliable questionnaire designed to evaluate participants’ awareness, knowledge, and attitudes regarding stem cells and regenerative dentistry. Differences in knowledge and attitude levels based on gender and year of entry, and correlation between knowledge and attitude were analyzed using independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation tests in SPSS, with a significance threshold set at P < 0.05.
Findings: The mean knowledge score was 5.95±1.68 out of 13, while the mean attitude score was 49.64±6.75 out of 70. No statistically significant differences in knowledge scores were observed based on gender or year of entry (P=0.687 and P=0.107, respectively). Similarly, attitude scores did not significantly differ by gender (P=0.471), although a statistically significant difference was noted among students from different entry years (P=0.023). Furthermore, knowledge and attitude had no statistically significant correlation (r=0.017, P=0.834). Nearly all participants reported familiarity with the term "stem cells" and awareness of the existence of a national stem cell bank.
Conclusions: Despite relatively high levels of awareness and positive attitudes among dental students toward stem cells and regenerative dentistry, the results underscore the need for enhanced, specialized education in this field. To bridge existing knowledge gaps and foster clinical competence, targeted scientific content should be incorporated into the curriculum, and practical learning opportunities should be offered through workshops and seminars.
