Background and Objective: Effective training in occupational safety, health, and environment (HSE) is essential for health sciences students before entering the clinical field. The present study aimed to design, implement, and evaluate occupational safety, health, and environment (HSE) training workshops for health sciences trainees in healthcare and medical settings at Khalkhal School of Medical Sciences.
Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted with a pretest-posttest design without a control group in 1404 at Khalkhal School of Medical Sciences. The sample size was determined using the census method. The research instrument was a researcher-made questionnaire consisting of 35 questions in three areas: knowledge (20 questions), attitude (10 questions), and self-reported performance (5 questions). Its content validity was confirmed with CVR>0.71 and CVI=0.86, and its reliability was confirmed with Cronbach's alpha (knowledge 0.87, attitude 0.84, and performance 0.81). The intervention consisted of a 48-hour HSE workshop (12 4-hour sessions over 6 weeks). The questionnaire was completed in three stages: pre-test, post-test, and one-month follow-up. Data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance, Bonferroni, and independent t-tests.
Findings: This study was conducted on 14 final-semester students (6 environmental health and 8 public health) with a mean age of 22.4. The average knowledge scores increased from 12.4±2.1 at pretest to 18.3±1.2 at posttest and 17.9±1.4 at follow-up (P<0.001). The average attitude scores increased from 32.6±4.3 to 45.8±2.9 and 44.9±3.1 and self-reported performance increased from 12.1±2.5 to 21.9±1.8 and 20.7±2.0 (P<0.001). Bonferroni test showed that the difference between pretest, posttest and follow-up was significant in all three domains (P<0.05), but the difference between posttest and follow-up was not significant (P<0.05), indicating relative retention of the training. There was no significant difference between the two training disciplines in any of the phases (P<0.05). Also, more than 85% of the participants reported the workshop to be interesting and recommended its continuation.
Conclusions: The 48-hour HSE training workshop significantly and sustainably increased the self-reported knowledge, attitude, and performance of health science students at Khalkhal School of Medical Sciences, and its effectiveness was independent of the field of study. Holding such workshops is recommended for all health science trainees.
