Background and Objective: Timely referral and treatment of malocclusions can benefit the patient and the clinician by reducing the cost of treatment and facilitating favourable jaw growth. This study was conducted with the aim of determining the awareness of dentists and last year dental students of Babol, Iran, about the appropriate timing of orthodontic treatments.
Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study, 171 participants (60 last year dental students, 43 general dental practitioners, 30 dental residents, and 38 non-orthodontic specialist dentists) answered a 23-question questionnaire about the appropriate timing for orthodontic treatments. Data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Chi-Square at a significance level of 0.05 using SPSS version 20 statistical software.
Findings: The average knowledge score among all groups was 12.33±3.66 (out of 23 score). dental residents obtained the highest score (14.06±3.01), followed by specialist dentists, General dentists, and last year dental students, each scoring 13.37, 12.02, and 11.06, respectively. The level of knowledge of students was significantly lower than that of assistants and specialists (p < 0.001), and women scored significantly higher than men. (p < 0.05).
Conclusions: The knowledge level of the correct timing of orthodontic treatment among dentists was moderate.
