Background and Objective: Given the prevalence of bleeding disorders and the critical role of their proper management in dental care, dentists’ knowledge in this area is essential to prevent complications. This study aimed to assess the level of awareness among general dentists in Babol regarding coagulation tests, anticoagulant medications, and related dental procedures in patients with bleeding disorders.
Methods: This descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in 2021 among general dental practitioners in Babol. Of the 91 dentists invited, 78 participated. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire comprising demographic information and 24 items assessing knowledge of coagulation tests, anticoagulant drugs, and clinical procedures. Validity and reliability had been confirmed in prior research. Data analysis was performed using t-test and ANOVA in SPSS, with a significance level of P < 0.05.
Findings: The participants had a mean age of 43.1 ± 11.64 years, and 70.1% were male. The average knowledge score was 12.29 ± 3.88 out of 24, with 74.4% demonstrating moderate knowledge. The highest awareness was related to clinical procedures such as tooth extraction (93.5%), while the lowest pertained to normal coagulation values and discontinuation of anticoagulants. Female dentists scored significantly higher than males (P = 0.028). No significant differences were observed based on age, years since graduation, or time since last related study (P > 0.05).
Conclusions: Despite relatively good awareness of clinical procedures, general dentists in Babol showed insufficient knowledge regarding coagulation tests and anticoagulant management. This underscores the need for enhanced theoretical and practical education in undergraduate curricula and continuing education programs.
