Background and Objective: Early diagnosis and treatment of potentially malignant oral disorders are critical factors in reducing patient mortality rates. Dentists play a key role in promoting oral health and preventing oral diseases through enhancing their knowledge and clinical skills. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitude of general dentists in Babol regarding oral precancerous lesions.
Methods: This descriptive-cross-sectional study was conducted in 2023 among general dentists practicing in Babol. Their knowledge and attitude concerning oral precancerous lesions were evaluated using a validated and reliable questionnaire. Data were analyzed using independent samples t-tests, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation via SPSS software, with a significance level set at 0.05.
Findings: The mean knowledge score of the general dentists regarding oral precancerous lesions was 5.7 ± 1.69 out of 8, and the mean attitude score was 19.44 ± 1.52 out of 21. More than half of the dentists demonstrated a good level of knowledge, and all participants showed a positive attitude. No statistically significant differences were observed in knowledge and attitude scores based on gender, years since graduation, or participation in continuing education courses (P > 0.05).
Conclusions: Despite the generally positive attitude of general dentists in Babol towards oral precancerous lesions, their relatively low level of knowledge highlights the necessity for implementing educational programs that focus on risk factors and prognostic indicators of oral cancer, both through continuing education initiatives and by placing greater emphasis within dental school curricula.
